What happens after my website launches?

After launch your site needs hosting, occasional updates, and help getting found on Google. Launch is the start of using your website, not the finish line.

Short answer: After launch your website needs three things to earn its keep: hosting to stay online, the occasional update to stay current, and some effort to get found on Google. Launch day is not the finish line, it is the point where your site starts doing its job. Knowing what comes next means it does not gather dust.

Keeping the site online

The first thing every live website needs is hosting. This is the service that keeps your site available on the internet, day and night. Without it, there is nothing to visit.

Hosting is normally a running cost, separate from the one-off build. With BuiltWeb, though, it is free, forever — there is no monthly hosting fee, unlike other web designers who charge one. What is web hosting explains what hosting actually does, and how much does website hosting cost sets out the realistic market range so you are not overcharged elsewhere.

Your domain name also renews, usually once a year for a small fee. That keeps your web address yours. These two things, hosting and domain, are the only genuinely unavoidable ongoing costs. Everything else is a choice.

Getting found on Google

A live website is not the same as a findable one. Launch day means the site exists; it does not mean people are landing on it yet.

Search engines need time to discover and rank a new site. For a local business, appearing in local searches often comes reasonably quickly, especially paired with a Google Business Profile. Broader, more competitive terms take longer. How long does SEO take to work gives honest timescales, and how to get my website on Google covers the first practical steps.

If most of your customers are local, what is local SEO is the most useful place to focus your attention. Getting the basics right early makes a real difference to how quickly the phone starts ringing.

Keeping it current

A website is not a leaflet you print once and forget. The businesses that get the most from their site treat it as a living thing.

That does not mean constant work. It means updating prices when they change, adding photos of recent jobs, refreshing a service when your offer shifts, and fixing anything that goes out of date. Much of this you can do yourself, as covered in can I update my website myself. Larger changes can be handled as one-off jobs, with add-ons from £60, so there is never a subscription just to keep things moving.

The key point is that because you own a BuiltWeb site outright, you are in control. You decide what gets updated and when, and you are never paying a monthly fee for work that is not being done.

Making the most of it

Beyond the basics, launch is a good moment to think about growth. Point your Google Business Profile, social accounts and email signature at the new site so traffic actually flows to it. Check that enquiries are coming through, and pay attention to what visitors do once they arrive.

If something is not working, that is useful information, not a failure. Why is my website not getting customers walks through the common causes and fixes. A site that launches and then quietly improves over its first few months will always outperform one that is left untouched.

So after launch: keep it hosted, help it get found, and keep it current. Do those three things and your website steadily earns its place rather than sitting idle.

Frequently asked questions

Does my website need ongoing hosting?

Yes. Every live website needs hosting to stay online. With BuiltWeb hosting is free, forever, and it is separate from the one-off build cost.

Will my site appear on Google straight away?

Not instantly. It takes time to get indexed and ranked, especially for competitive searches. Local visibility often comes faster than broad terms.

Do I have to keep paying to keep my website?

You own the site outright, so no. The only running cost is hosting and your domain. Any updates are optional and handled as one-off jobs.
