What is local SEO?

Local SEO helps your business show up when nearby customers search for what you offer, through your Google Business Profile, local pages and reviews.

Short answer: Local SEO is the work of getting your business found by people searching nearby, like 'electrician near me' or 'cafe in Bristol'. It focuses on your Google Business Profile, location-specific pages and consistent details across the web, rather than competing nationally.

Why local SEO matters for small businesses

Most trades, shops and service businesses do not need to rank across the whole country. A plumber in Norwich does not care about searches in Newcastle. Local SEO narrows the focus to the people who can actually become customers, which makes it far more achievable than broad national SEO.

It also tends to work faster. Competing for 'plumber' is nearly impossible, but 'plumber Norwich' is a search you can realistically win. That is why, for most of the businesses we build for, local SEO is the highest-value effort. See how long does SEO take to work for why the local route moves quicker.

The Google Business Profile

The single most important tool is your Google Business Profile, the free listing that shows your business on Google Maps and in the local pack, that box of three businesses with a map that appears for local searches. It carries your reviews, hours, phone number and photos.

Setting it up properly and keeping it active does a lot of heavy lifting. Fill in every field, add real photos, keep your hours accurate and respond to reviews. For the detail on this, read how to rank on Google Maps.

Your website's part

Your site supports the profile. Location pages help: if you serve several towns, a clear page for each gives Google a reason to show you for those searches. Your address and phone number should match exactly everywhere they appear online, because inconsistency confuses search engines.

Content that mentions the areas you serve, in a natural way rather than stuffed, also helps. Choosing the right keywords with your town or region in mind is the starting point. Every BuiltWeb build ships with SEO foundations, and our local SEO add-on from £60 handles the profile and location groundwork for you.

Reviews and consistency

Genuine reviews are one of the strongest local ranking signals, and they influence whether people actually click. Ask happy customers to leave one, make it easy with a direct link, and reply to them. Never buy fake reviews; Google detects and removes them and it can damage your listing.

Consistency ties it together. Your business name, address and phone number should be identical across your site, your profile and any directories you appear in. Small mismatches add up and hold you back. Our web design service and packages both lay this groundwork from the start.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need local SEO if I only work in one town?

Yes, that is exactly who it is for. If your customers are nearby, local SEO is usually the highest-value SEO you can do.

Is a Google Business Profile the same as local SEO?

The profile is a big part of it, but local SEO also covers location pages on your site, consistent contact details and genuine reviews across the web.

Does BuiltWeb offer local SEO?

Yes. We offer a local SEO add-on from £60 on top of every build, and all our sites include the general SEO foundations to support it.
